They both got 50 series engines right around the 8,000 hr mark. Was it common to just overhaul the 01-619s or slip in a updated engine or 50 series engine? One of the local farms around here had a pair of 8640s. Anyways NAT gossip makes it sound like these tractors had trouble making it to 1,000 hrs so I was kind of surprised to see the hrs and still have the original engine. This one at some point looks like it had a new head. A lot of customers didn't take advantage of the updated motor. If I remember right the engine upgrades were cost shared between Deere and the customer. A 50 series block will have a threaded block heater vs frost plug type. 40 and 50 series will each have different casting numbers. It will give the block numbers that were used during certain serial no. Take the casting part number off the block (located a little below starter ), then go to John Deere's parts website under 8630 and look up engine. I will check on the ID plate on my 8650s in the morning, 19 both original engines. I was just curious because it seems like most 8630/40s that are still left has a 50 series engine in it. This engine is in a 1975 8630 that is for sale locally. I'm not sure, I know at one time Deere had a book that had all the improvement's of the 619. But I know we have an 8640, and it has the crank driven pump. I was never clear on the differences. I'm wondering is this engine a 30 series 619 or 50 series 619? Or can you even tell by the serial number? It's the early model that you don't want.
